Under the auspices of Uncharted Territory Exhibition Oualie Art is also pleased to present two workshops: paper cutting and popup books making with Béatrice Coron; an acclaimed book artist, paper cutter, sculptor, teacher and conceptual artist. The student will have the privilege of working with Béatrice as she demonstrates her process through examples of her remarkable work. The workshops will host approximately two groups of fifteen individuals per group divided between two shifts: morning and afternoon. Creating a supportive environment, this initiative promotes an exchange of ideas and the dialogue in the local art community as well as an opportunity to develop new interests and skills and get involved with a whole range of activities related to the amazing art of paper cutting. The registration fee for each workshop is $5. Registration Deadline May 1, 2009.
Paper Cutting

Paper-cutting is an ancient but little-known medium for the creation of images, books, structures and prints. It provides many artistic possibilities, such as giving volume to flat surfaces and exploiting the aesthetics of positive and negative space. During this workshop we will discover the deep historical roots of paper-cutting in many cultures and learn simple techniques to create your own projects.

Discover the fascinating world of books through the eyes and art of master paper-cutter Béatrice Coron whose work of the book-form are in major collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and Bibiotheque Nationale de France. Participants will learn paper folding and cutting techniques to create the structure of albums and pamphlets as well as other aspects of design used to illustrate a book’s content.

As part of Uncharted Territory exhibition, Sight Specific Projects will convene a lecture presentation. The presentation will also highlight the goal of Sight Specific Projects to contribute to the building of the groundwork for a sustainable community of artists and a healthy creative environment for future generations. The goal of the presentation is to make the public aware of our intentions as contributors to a new sense of collaboration and community. Sight Specific Projects will also present the details of the next project, re·con·struc·tion.
